Although Jenner’s music is entirely committed to the world of sound of his teacher, Brahms, it has at the same time a distinctly personal musical texture. It is sensitive and inward-looking, often characterized by a narrow motivic nexus. From 1906 onwards, Jenner engaged himself intensively with the subject of “folk song”, gave musicological lectures about it and arranged numerous Altdeutsche Volkslieder (Old German folk songs) from the 17th century, also for four-part mixed choir. Thus, he is likewise part of the artistic and scientific examination of historical music that was intensively pursued in the Romantic era as well. “It is thanks to him that he has brought these old, beautiful songs back to today's audience in this new guise and in this excellent arrangement, which we have not heard before, and it is to be hoped that this arrangement will find the widest possible distribution.”, can be read in the Hessische Landeszeitung of July 15, 1911 after a concert in which three of these sacred choral arrangements were performed. Easy-to-sing and expressive, they can leave a lasting impression in church services and sacred and Christmas concerts even today.
