Gustav Jenner

1865 – 1920

Gustav Jenner

Cornelius Uwe Gustav Jenner, composer and music teacher, was born on the island of Sylt as the son of a doctor. In Kiel, the poet Klaus Groth strove to further his musical career; in Vienna he became the (only!) composition student of Johannes Brahms. Jenner considered this encounter to be the decisive stroke of luck in his artistic life and, moreover, the two North Germans were also on friendly terms with one another. On Brahms’ recommendation, the Philipps University appointed him to the post of University Music Director in Marburg in 1895. Jenner felt at home in this small town, where he was able to develop freely as an artist.
