The Alma Redemptoris Mater is attributed to Hermann of Reichenau (1013-1054), who lived in the Benedictine monastery of Reichenau on Lake Constance and is considered one of the universal scholars of his time. This hymn of supplication to Mary has a firm place in the monastic Liturgy of the Hours and is sung in its original form as an antiphon in numerous monasteries, especially during Advent and at compline in the Christmas season. This simple, easily singable three-part choral composition with organ accompaniment was composed at the suggestion of Frater Amandus Osthues OCist. of the Mehrerau Monastery and is an excellent choice for religious services, spiritual celebrations and Advent and Christmas concerts.
