Who doesn't know the famous pastorale Christmas music of the shepherds (Pifa) from George Frideric Handel's Messiah? Through the gently rocking melody one is carried back in time to Rome of the Baroque era when the shepherds, the pifferari, coming from the surrounding areas, entered the Eternal City to play their shawms at the various mangers. Access to this instrumental jewel is opened to choirs through this sensitive arrangement for mixed voices SATB a cappella (organ/piano ad lib). Using excerpts from a pastoral poem in German (Glückliche Hirten) by the Baroque poet Catharina Regina von Greiffenberg. The singable English text is a translation of the poem. Michael Aschauer combines in a distinctly atmospheric manner the lyrics and music in a touching Christmas song.
