Solitude was written in 2014 for Auckland-based choir, North Shore Chorale and their conductor, Nicholas Forbes. The almost schizophrenic nature of Ella Wheeler Wilcox' poem – with moments of great optimism such as, "Laugh and the world laughs with you", immediately juxtaposed with the despairing line, "Weep and you weep alone" – provides good tone painting opportunities. Changes in tempo and key changes and dynamics provide for variety. The piece builds up to a dramatic conclusion with a very jazzy final chord.
