Nigra sum, set in an a cappella voicing, is part of the six-part cycle titled Excelsis dealing in various ways with “on high”. Excelsis was commissioned by the Collegium Vocale Hannover under the direction of Florian Lohmann. The text (from the Song of Solomon) and the music in Nigra sum is about the cyclical change of seasons caused by the heavenly stars, the arrival of spring and its accompanying “renewal”. In the middle section of this composition an impressive, contemplative atmosphere unfolds in a fabric of repetitive patterns, clusters and overtones, whereas the beginning and the end are shaped by a mysterious-like harmony.
