Hans Koessler was the cousin of Max Reger, the student of Joseph Rheinberger and a friend of Johannes Brahms. Franz Liszt appointed him to his Royal Hungarian Music Academy in Budapest to influence an entire generation of Hungarian composers. Einsamkeit was published in 1912 as part of Hans Koessler's collection Lieder und Gesänge (Lieder and part songs).
