Martin Völlinger uses Henri Du Mont's well-known melody as the basis for his richly varied new setting of the Salve regina. Jubilant, sometimes also plaintive and powerful, the text unfolds along the lines of syncopated rhythms. At the same time homophonic and polyphonic setting alternates as well as different tempi. Recurring passages on which Völlinger imitates the Gregorian choral style connects the various expressive sections. This piece is a rewarding challenge for dedicated church and chamber choirs.
