Various allusions to the Roman god Neptune and his sovereign territory, the sea, form the textual basis of the virtuoso choral composition, a “companion piece” to Ostrzyga’s Iuppiter: fragments of plays by William Shakespeare (Macbeth and The Tempest), the Bible (the Flood), Baron van Swieten’s libretto to Haydn’s Creation (reference to the Leviathan), Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Phillis Wheatley’s poem Ode to Neptune. In addition, there are sobriquets for Neptune and diverse mythical sea creatures of various cultures. All of this inspired a highly impressive soundscape.
