Friedrich Wilhelm Kücken, born in Bleckede near Lüneburg and son of an executioner by profession, was one of the most popular composers of his time. One can admire his expressive and easily singable melodies, the sensitive warmth and the versatile compositional technique in his monophonic and multi-part lieder. The merits of Kücken's style are shown exemplarily in his Advent motet Mache dich auf! Werde Licht! (Arise! Shine!) which is characterized by a propulsive melody and rhythm, convincing harmony, by effective dynamic contrasts and clear structures. Owing to its immediately catchy musical language which at the same time aptly refers to the underlying text, this motet is an enhancement to any Christmas concert even in this day and age.
