The French composer and pianist Charles Valentin Alkan ranks among the most fascinating musical personalities of the Romantic era. He dealt only very rarely with vocal music - therefore the Halleluja for mixed choir published in 1857, a setting of Psalm 150 in Hebrew, fascinates us all the more. Not difficult to perform, this effective, compact and harmonically simple hymn of praise is characterized by a rousing, gripping momentum. The organ or piano accompaniment (ad lib.) based on the choral setting gives the Halleluja an extra festive radiance and also acts as a support for the voices.
