The image that posterity has of Max Reger is above all that of an organist and composer of organ music, but he also devoted himself to vocal music in all the varied expressions of the genre. The title words of this choral piece fatefully over the life of the composer: When Reger was found dead at the age of only 43, the manuscript of his still unpublished Opus 138 lay open in front of him. It is the message of the text, which is in the foreground of this musical setting. Traditional elements of the old church style stand in contrast with a harmonic layout that is romantic in its effect. This choral work by Reger impresses with the clarity of its structures and its open declaration in favour of the classic a-cappella composition.
