The image of a small town in the evening light conveys an atmosphere of peace and quiet, perhaps even of returning home. Time stands still and the shops and sounds of the day are silent. To a certain extent the homophonic setting of this famous Christmas carol of the mid-19th century includes quite dissonant harmonies, but is still easy to sing as each part follows a logical melody.
