This expansive, choric composition by Frederic Mattes presents the Kyrie in a somewhat different tonal language based on impressionist models. The individual vocal registers range between mystically floating, dark and occasionally brightly shining. Initially, the high voices appear alongside the lower men’s voices before the registers gradually become more and more intertwined. After a free chorale-like “Kyrie eleison” in the tenor, the composition comes to rest in a calm, radiant major chord in the low men’s voices.
