Johann Hieronymus Kapsberger – a virtuoso on the newly invented theorbo – composed countless compositions for this instrument whose place has been taken by today's electric guitar. The colascione that served as a source of inspiration for the song Greenwood Tree could have been the intro to a Stones song: power chords, an earthy groove and all in all a sound that one cannot believe is already about 400 years old. In the search for a fitting text, Winnie Brückner quickly hit pay dirt with Kapberger's contemporary, William Shakespeare. The verses used from the play As You Like It symbolize a bit of anarchy: The protagonist invites his friends to join him under the "Greenwood Tree" – a place where one can live in peace, security from authority and power and, above all, in freedom.
