Thomas Morley is considered to be one of the central figures of the madrigal tradition in Elizabethan England. With the publication of Italian madrigals and the English adaptations of works by Italian composers he influenced the English reception of Italy considerably. Morley borrowed ideas from a composition by Luca Marenzio for his piece Fyer! Fyer! and in 1595 published his new version in English as well as in Italian (A la strada). Both of these versions are included in the present edition. From Marenzio's folksong-like villanella a polyphonic, elaborately wrought vocal piece by Morley emerges that is still able to preserve the light-footed tone of the original.
