With his Christmas concerto Giuseppe Torelli is part of a great Italian tradition, which began with the famous concerto by Arcangelo Corelli. Michael Aschauer skillfully combines succinct themes from various musical sections of Torelli's Concerto grosso to great effect to create a vocal concerto for Christmastide, thus making this Christmas concerto for the first time accessible to choirs. The German lyrics (Kind, dreimal süßes Kind) by Andreas Gryphius, which Aschauer has used for his arrangement, fit exactly to the music. The English lyrics are a translation of the poem. Maintained as it is at a thoroughly virtuoso level over long stretches, this choral arrangement presents a rewarding challenge for dedicated choirs and vocal ensembles.
