In its terse and expressive verses, psalm 40 gives an impressive description of the path from misery, through hope to deliverance, whereupon the psalmist thus saved sings a hymn of praise to the Lord: In God we can trust, we can count on the help of the Lord. In his musical setting, Michael Aschauer recreates this path and clothes the facets of the text of this psalm, as contradictory as they are varied, in effective tones using musical resources that are equal in their variety. This work was given its highly successful first performance in the closing concert of the Murau International Music Festival on 23 August 2013, conducted by Zane Zalis. To be sung with English or German lyrics (Auf den Herren vertrauen).
