The pianist and composer Ignaz Brüll is familiar to the music world nowadays almost only as a close friend of Johannes Brahms – of all his works at the most his serenades for string orchestra are known. However, Brüll also composed vocal music which, concurrent with his calm nature, is largely characterized by a graciously charming idyllic atmosphere. An excellent example of this is the choral song showcased here O Sonne, o Sonne (Oh Sun, oh Sun). Easily singable, in part folksong-like and with catchy melodies, small skillful details – although restrained and unobtrusive – can yet be discovered everywhere. This is a finely composed romantic atmospheric picture worth rediscovering.
