Inspired by probably his most well-known sacred composition for men’s choir, the motet O sacrum convivium, Alwin M. Schronen has composed a cohesive mass composition with the same title that contains musical references to the original work in many of its parts. Thus, the Kyrie consists entirely of parts of the motet, whereby the halleluiah motif is omitted. This, in turn, is found in the “Qui tollis peccata mundi” of the Gloria as well as in the “Dona nobis pacem” of the Agnus Dei. And so the attentive listener can discover additional resemblances. The Missa O sacrum convivium can be performed as a complete liturgical work in a church service or even concertante. Likewise, the parts of the mass can be performed separately and independently of each other. A rewarding composition that offers men’s choirs a valuable addition to their sacred repertoire.
