In these three motets (which can also be performed individually) Franz M. Herzog explores in a poignant manner the path from suffering to comfort and hope. Composed on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, but ultimately extending beyond this situation and timelessly performable on many occasions, humans’ imploring entreaty for God’s assistance (Hear My Prayer, oh Lord) is followed by a touching, hopeful movement in the form of a divine response (Be Not Afraid). The piece concludes with the joyously jubilant Praise the Lord. The composer has created a work that provides the performers as well as the audience with an outlet in difficult times, thus initial deep grief is overcome and ultimately confidence dominates.
