The composition of this piece was commissioned by the Singakademie Graz (Graz Choral Academy) for the 2010 World Choir Games in China. The content is based on a legend of the native North American Abenaki tribe: the creator gives the “spirit of the drum” to the world as a gift, and since that time the spirit has filled both the pulse of life and the music of mankind with rhythm. Lorenz Maierhofer brings this fascinating tale to the concert platform to great effect, using powerful rhythms and a classically modern musical language.
