This popular Icelandic folk song – to be sung with Icelandic or new English lyrics – takes one to a remote, inhospitable region of the Icelandic Highlands that was believed to be the home of legendary creatures and dangerous outcasts from time immemorial. It was fear of such denizens that impelled one group of travellers to put this trail – the so-called Sprengisandur – behind them as rapidly as possible. The steady spurring of the horses is effectively expressed in Michael Aschauer’s rousing arrangement of this highlight by Sigvaldi Kaldalóns, especially through the rhythmically accentuated bass part.
