Studies in church music in Heidelberg and studies in the organ soloist at the Academy of Music Stuttgart. Since 1999 he has been the church music director at the Christuskirche in Mannheim, the district cantor of Mannheim and the state cantor of North Baden, Germany. Since 2000 he has been associate professor at the State Academy of Music in Mannheim for artistic organ performance, conducting and ensemble directing. He was appointed professor in 2012. Johannes Matthias Michel has become known as a composer with about 200 published works. His focuses are on music for choirs, organ and wind instruments, on choral-symphonic works, music for children's choirs and chamber music.
