Alessandro Scarlatti compiled a collection of sacred songs for the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1708. At that time he was Chapel Master of the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome and composed several motets for that celebration of the Catholic Church. The psalm setting Exultate Deo was written in this context. With ascending fourth leaps, dotted rhythms and rich melismatic melodic phrases Scarlatti conveys in his setting the joyous mood of the psalm verse. Here he demonstrates the broad spectrum of his musical mastery and impresses with the piece Exultate Deo through an artistic compositional diversity.
